The vagus nerve plays a huge role in regulating your dog’s nervous system, especially the part that manages rest, digestion, and calm behaviors. But when it’s constantly bombarded by certain sounds, it can shift the body into a state of stress or survival.

How Dogs Hear Differently Than Humans

  • Dogs hear higher frequencies than we do—and can detect sounds up to 65,000 Hz (humans top out around 20,000 Hz).

  • They also have acute directional hearing, which means even distant thunder or the rumble of fireworks can feel like it’s coming from right next to them.

  • These sounds aren’t just louder—they’re more invasive to a dog’s nervous system.
