Summer: Season of Fire
TCVM 5 Element Theory
Summer is more than hot pavement, longer walks, beach days, and dogs stealing the good spot in front of the fan.
In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, summer is the season of the **Fire Element** — June 22 through September 9.
Fire is connected to joy, love, connection, the Heart, circulation, emotional balance, and the Small Intestine. And some dogs feel that seasonal shift more than others.
A balanced Fire dog is often affectionate, social, expressive, playful, and deeply connected to their people.
But when Fire tips out of balance, you may see two different patterns:
**Too much Fire / excess heat:**
Restlessness, anxiety, overexcitement, excessive panting, heat intolerance, red gums, emotional clinginess, stress diarrhea, or trouble settling at night. Heat seems to flare attitudes and behavior as well.
**Too little Fire / deficiency:**
Lower joy, emotional flatness, reduced enthusiasm, poor circulation, weaker stamina, sensitivity to stress, or a dog who seems less emotionally connected than usual.
And then there are the dogs who swing between both… the “I’m fine, I’m not fine, I love you, don’t leave me, why is it hot, also where’s my snack?” dogs.
Summer support is not just about avoiding overheating. It is also about cooling the body, calming the nervous system, supporting the Heart, and keeping your dog emotionally steady through the season.

How to tell whether your dog may be a Fire dog
If your dog gets anxious, clingy, overexcited, overheated, restless, or struggles to sleep during the summer months… this is a good one to read.
