Inflammaging in Dogs
What It Is and How to Combat It
Inflammaging is a term that combines “inflammation” and “aging” to describe the chronic, low-grade inflammation that occurs as a dog ages. This persistent inflammation contributes to the gradual breakdown of tissues and organs, accelerating the aging process and increasing the risk of age-related diseases.
Unlike acute inflammation, which is a short-term immune response to injury or infection, inflammaging is a slow, systemic, and long-lasting condition that wears down the body’s defenses over time. It’s often silent, meaning pet parents may not notice symptoms until disease or dysfunction has already set in.
