Easter Safety
Keeping the pups safe during the festivities and visits
Easter is one of those holidays that feels safe… until you realize how many hidden landmines are sitting at nose level for your dog.
Let’s keep this simple and real so you can enjoy the day without a vet visit.
🌸 Easter Lilies & Dogs
Easter lilies (Lilium longiflorum) are not the same level of danger for dogs as they are for cats—they don’t cause the severe, life-threatening kidney failure we see in cats.
But… that doesn’t mean they’re harmless.
If your dog decides to snack on one, you could see:
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Drooling
Abdominal discomfort
So while it’s not panic-level toxic, it’s still a “let’s not test it” situation. Keep them out of reach.
🍫 Chocolate (still a hard no)
I know… it’s Easter. There’s chocolate everywhere.
Just remember:
It’s not about if your dog will find it… it’s when
Smaller dogs = bigger problems faster
Dark chocolate = more concentrated risk
This is one of the easiest things to prevent—just don’t leave it where curious noses can reach.
🥚 The good news… they CAN join the fun
Dogs can enjoy Easter eggs—just not the candy-filled kind.
Think:
Plain hard-boiled eggs
Fresh, simple, real food treats
A little “hunt” in the yard or house
Let them be included… just in a way their body actually benefits from.
👜 Watch the guest factor (this one gets missed a lot)
Granny, Aunt Sue, the neighbor popping in…
They all bring purses, bags, and suitcases full of things your dog has never seen before.
Be mindful of:
Xylitol (gum, candies, baked goods)
Medications
Mints and cough drops
Snack bars or “sugar-free” anything
Dogs don’t know the difference between a purse and a snack bag.
🐾 Holiday vibe check
Your dog feeds off your energy.
If the house feels chaotic, loud, and unpredictable… you’ll see it in their behavior.
Set them up for success:
Give them a quiet space if needed
Keep routines somewhat normal
Let them participate in a calm, structured way
Easter doesn’t have to be restrictive… just intentional.
A little awareness goes a long way in keeping the day fun—for everyone.
