Deterring Snakes In Your Yard
But not everything is pet friendly
I saw a post in a community group about plants that “keep snakes away”… and while some of them may help make your yard less appealing, there’s another piece most people don’t even think about:
Not all of the plants are dog-friendly.
So before you go planting everything on that list, here’s the quick reality check.
🌿 Some are generally fine around dogs
These are the easier yeses for most yards:
Lemongrass
Rosemary - unless you have a seizure dog
Marigolds
Agapanthus
You still don’t want your dog eating half the garden… but these aren’t typically a concern with normal exposure.
🌿 Some need a little more thought
This is where people get tripped up:
Garlic — if accessible and your dog eats a large quantity
Onion — hard no.
Chives — hard no.
These are part of the allium family.
So if your dog is a digger or a “snack on everything” type… I’d be strategic or skip these.
🚩 And a few I’d be cautious with
Wormwood
Mugwort
Snake plant
These can cause digestive upset or be irritating if ingested. Not usually a problem unless your dog decides to taste-test them… but some dogs absolutely will.
Here’s the bottom line
Maybe… some plants may help deter snakes.
But plants are not a force field—and they’re not always chosen with your dog in mind.
Your dog’s habits matter just as much as what you plant.
A curious, mouthy dog can turn a “low-risk” plant into a problem real quick.
Don’t forget to keep your Homeopathic Snake Bite Kit on hand if your area is know to be snake-friendly.
