poop.

Your dog’s gut influences digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, skin health, allergies, inflammation, behavior, and even how well they age.

In fact, roughly 70% of the immune system resides in and around the digestive tract. When the gut is struggling, the effects often show up far beyond the intestines.

I often see dogs with chronic itching, ear infections, food sensitivities, recurring diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune conditions, and even anxiety that have significant gut imbalances hiding beneath the surface.

Maybe you’re watching your dog slow down… maybe you’re navigating a diagnosis… or maybe your intuition just knows the winds are shifting.

And while your dog is still here—curled up on their bed, following you from room to room, maybe even still wagging their tail—it feels like part of you is already grieving.

That’s anticipatory grief. And yes, it’s real. And yes, it matters.

What Is Anticipatory Grief?

Most pet parents experience the passing of a beloved dog in one of two ways:

Sometimes, it happens suddenly. No warning, no goodbye. You’re left reeling and grasping for closure.

Other times, it’s slow and stretched out. A diagnosis. A steady decline. The kind that gives you time to prepare—but also time to worry. Time to fear. Time to feel every moment like sand slipping through your hands.

Anticipatory grief is the pain we feel before a loss actually happens. It’s filled with what-ifs, slow goodbyes, and emotional whiplash. One day you’re laughing at their antics. The next, you’re crying over a skipped meal or a harder-than-usual walk.

And it’s not just about sadness. It’s the uncertainty. The hypervigilance. The aching love that doesn’t know what to do with itself.

The Quiet Vigil

Some pet parents have shared that they spend nights listening for their dog to breathe. If the usual nighttime stirrings don’t come, they lie there in the dark, hoping everything is still okay. That sort of quiet panic—where you’re not ready to say goodbye but constantly bracing for it—is something many of us go through.

The soul-sucking exhaustion of living in limbo is real. Grieving someone who’s still with you is one of the hardest emotional places to sit.

You want to treasure every moment—but your brain is trying to prepare for goodbye. And your heart can’t keep up.

The Hidden Toll on You and Your Dog

Unprocessed anticipatory grief doesn’t just weigh on your spirit—it takes a toll on your body, too.

Pet parents often experience:

Sleepless nights

Nervous stomach or loss of appetite

Guilt, overwhelm, or second-guessing every decision

Emotional shutdown or caregiver burnout

And here’s what we often overlook: your dog feels it too.

Our animals are highly attuned to our energy. When we’re anxious, they often become more restless. When we’re sad, they may stick closer. Some begin pacing, vocalizing, or withdrawing—all in response to what we are carrying.

So when we care for our own nervous system, we’re caring for theirs too.

The Risk of Missing the Moments

Don’t let your fear of loss, the fear of their future absence allow you to miss out on today’s joy.
It’s easy to focus only on what’s coming… and miss the joy that’s still here, today.

Do the thinks your dog enjoys today. Do them everyday. And when the time times, make that the best day ever for the dog if you can.

If you have the time to prepare – no matter how hard it is – love those moments with your dog.

When you can be with your dog in the now, without letting fear hijack every moment, it changes everything. It lets you love them without reservation, right up to the last breath.

Staying Present Is the Hardest—and Best—Thing You Can Do

Grief wants to drag us into the future. But your dog? They’re still here. Still soaking in the sunshine. Still asking for a bite of your sandwich. Still loving you with every breath.

So take the walk. Sing the silly song. Let them roll in the grass.

This isn’t just about making peace with what’s coming. It’s about making the most of what still is.

Want More Support?

Inside my member forum, I’ve shared the full emotional support protocol I use with clients:

Essential oils for each stage of grief

Herbal and homeopathic tools that support both you and your dog

How grief can affect the immune system and behavior

Guided reflection questions to help you process and prepare

This isn’t just about making peace with what’s coming. It’s about making the most of what still is.

Let’s bring in essential oils, a sense of community, and anything else we need to get all of us through these stages of life. We will all face them.

A Gentle Reminder

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” — Psalm 56:3

You don’t have to carry this alone. Lean into the quiet moments. Trust that love will guide you—and that presence will always mean more than perfection.

Fleas, Ticks, and Summer It seems like everyone is panicking this week. I’m on my eleventy-billionth inquiry about fleas and ticks. Full on infestations - new puppies, traveling adventures, in the house, we just moved to the south, and so on.

Every year, I say the same thing:

Dana Brigman | WelloiledK9 is a reader-supported publication. That means good nutrition, healthy skin, non-attractive odor, etc.

Treat the yard. Way more important than you realize — but a big challenge for apartment dwellers.

Do not wait until you have an infestation.

And every year, plenty of people wait until they have an infestation.

So here we are.

Let’s talk about fleas, ticks, traditional products, natural options, puppies, active infestations, yard treatment, and the long-term prevention strategy most people want to skip until they are in a pickle.

And don’t forget — when you’re a member with me — you’re getting seasonal reminders before it’s time!

The Problem With Waiting Until There Is A Problem

Fleas do not show up politely one at a time and announce themselves.

By the time you are seeing fleas on your dog, there may already be eggs, larvae, and pupae in the house, bedding, rugs, furniture, yard, and anywhere else your dog spends time.

The goal is not to throw every chemical product at your dog and hope for the best. The goal is to build a smart, layered plan that reduces exposure, supports the dog’s body, and keeps you from reaching the “I need something nuclear” stage.

The Products That Concern Me Most

There are products I personally avoid whenever possible.

Hartz Flea and Tick Products

If there is one product line that consistently worries me, it is Hartz.

Over the years, there have been many reports of reactions ranging from skin irritation to neurologic symptoms and, in some cases, death.

Could some dogs use them without issue?

Sure.

Some people also eat gas station sushi and live to tell the story. That does not make it my recommendation.

There are too many better options available for me to suggest gambling with these products.

Seresto Collars

This one always starts arguments.

Many pet parents swear by Seresto collars. I understand that. They are convenient, they last a long time, and people like easy.

But convenience is not the same thing as low-risk.

Seresto collars have been associated with many adverse event reports over the years, including neurologic symptoms, seizures, skin reactions, behavior changes, and deaths. Even though it’s not “ingested”, I assure you those toxins are still making their way into your dog’s bloodstream through fur and skin.

Does every dog react?

No.

But if you have a dog with seizures, allergies, autoimmune disease, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, unexplained behavior changes, or medication sensitivity, I would think very carefully before adding constant chemical exposure around the neck 24/7.

Isoxazoline Products

This category includes products such as:

NexGard

Simparica

Bravecto

Credelio

The FDA has acknowledged neurologic adverse events associated with this class of medications, including seizures, tremors, and ataxia.

Many dogs take these products without obvious side effects. But I believe these dogs are indeed accumulating toxins in their systems.

This is especially important if your dog has a seizure history, unexplained anxiety, neurologic symptoms, chronic health issues, or high sensitivity to medications.

Every pet parent deserves informed consent before making that decision.

Not fear.

Not shame.

Not “just do what everyone else does.”

Informed consent.

I explain these product risks on my website.

What I Prefer Instead

My goal is not to kill every bug within a three-mile radius. But wouldn’t that be cool.

My goal is to make your dog a less attractive target while reducing unnecessary chemical exposure.

Think layers of protection.

Not one magic product.

No single spray, pill, collar, tag, oil, herb, vitamin, or prayer candle is going to carry the whole plan.

Essential Oils

This is one of my favorite tools.

Many insects rely heavily on scent to locate hosts. Certain essential oils help create an environment that is less appealing to fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and other pests.

Commonly used oils include:

Lemongrass

Cedarwood

Geranium

Citronella

Lavender

Peppermint

Eucalyptus

Kunzea

I use essential oils as part of a larger strategy, not as the only strategy.

The goal is deterrence, not poisoning the dog.

This can include outdoor sprays, collar applications, bandanas, yard sprays, and environmental support.

And yes, quality and proper use matter.

Kin + Kind, 4-Legger, and Ready-Made Options

I love my essential oils. Understatement.

I love Animal Scents products.

I love hydrosols and customized natural wellness tools.

But let’s be honest: sometimes people need something today, and not everyone is ready to mix their own products.

That is where ready-made options come in.

Kin + Kind and 4-Legger products are good examples of natural options that are easy for pet parents to use. Many can be ordered quickly, including from Amazon, and often delivered fast.

If your dog is itchy today, you do not need to spend three weeks “researching” while the fleas build a vacation home in your carpet.

Get something appropriate.

Use it.

Then build a better plan.

If your dog hates the sprays and spritzes, turn it into homemade wipes. Easy peasy!

Garlic

Cue the internet panic.

When used appropriately, fresh garlic has been used for generations to help make dogs less appealing to fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes.

No, I am not talking about feeding an entire bulb of garlic.

No, garlic is not automatically toxic just because someone made a dramatic meme about it.

I am talking about appropriate amounts based on body weight, the individual dog, and common sense.

Fresh garlic is one of the tools I use as part of a broader prevention strategy. It is not the whole plan, but it can be a useful piece.

Vitamin B Support

Some dogs seem to be bug magnets.

Vitamin B support is often used as part of a natural insect-deterrent plan. It is not a standalone solution, but it may help support the overall strategy.

Again, layers.

Always layers.

Ultrasonic Flea and Tick Tags

Ultrasonic tags sound like the perfect low-tox solution: no sprays, no pills, no pesticide collars.

But results are mixed.

Some pet parents swear by them. Others see no difference at all. I consider them a possible extra layer, not a complete prevention plan.

One thing to keep in mind is that dogs hear frequencies we do not. Some sensitive dogs may not tolerate constant ultrasonic input well.

If you notice new anxiety, restlessness, collar avoidance, sleep changes, or increased sensitivity after adding one, remove it and reassess.

Helpful for some dogs?

Maybe.

A miracle shield?

Nope.

What About Puppies Under 6 Months?

This is where I become much more conservative.

Puppies under six months are still developing. Their nervous system, detoxification pathways, gut microbiome, and immune system are immature.

This is not the age where I want people grabbing the strongest product on the shelf because they forgot summer happens every single year.

For puppies, I prefer focusing on:

Environmental control

Daily tick checks

Flea combing

Yard management

Gentle natural repellents

Clean nutrition

Gut support

Immune support

Careful observation

Puppies are not tiny adult dogs.
If you are using essential oils — dilution is very important.

Read labels carefully. Many products have age and weight restrictions. Natural does not mean “use anything, anytime, on anyone.”

Be thoughtful.

What If Your Dog Already Has Fleas?

You can have the best prevention plan in the world and still end up with fleas.

It happens.

But if you are already seeing fleas, now is not the time to dab one drop of lavender on a bandana and call it a day.

You need to act.

The goal now is simple:

Kill the active fleas.

Treat the environment.

Soothe the skin.

Prevent the next generation.

Step One: Reduce The Active Fleas

For active fleas, I often suggest getting the immediate problem under control first and then switching to prevention.

Options include:

A single Dawn dish soap bath (assuming you have no other options on hand!)

Flea combing

Washing bedding

Vacuuming daily

Borax

Treating the home environment

A single Dawn bath can dramatically reduce the number of active fleas.

I do not recommend using Dawn as a routine shampoo. It is a one-time “we have an urgent problem” tool.

Use it, rinse well, and move on. Follow with an epsom salt rinse.

Step Two: Consider Capstar For Big Infestations

For severe infestations, Capstar can be extremely helpful.

Capstar works quickly and can dramatically reduce the active flea burden while you address the environment.

If you have dozens of fleas jumping on the dog, the couch, and your ankles, this is not the time to argue online about holistic versus conventional approaches.

Get the infestation under control first.

Then build a better prevention plan moving forward.

If you only treat the dog and ignore the house and yard, you are fighting a battle you are going to lose.

Follow with an epsom salt rinse and some milk thistle.

Step Three: Soothe The Skin

Once the active fleas are under control, do not forget the skin.

Many dogs continue scratching for days or even weeks after the fleas are gone because the skin remains irritated and inflamed from the bites.

Helpful recovery options may include:

Epsom salt soaks for irritated paws and feet

Cooled chamomile tea rinses or sprays

Cooled green tea rinses or sprays

Aloe vera gel

Colloidal oatmeal baths

Lavender hydrosol

Roman Chamomile hydrosol

Helichrysum hydrosol

Animal Scents Ointment

CBD topical products such as Soothe

Gentle bathing with a quality natural shampoo

Do not allow your dog to drink Epsom salt soak water.

Do not use soaks or sprays on open wounds, raw skin, or severe irritation.

The sooner you support the skin, the sooner everyone in the house gets some sleep.

If the itching continues long after the fleas are gone, it may be time to look deeper at allergies, gut health, detoxification pathways, inflammation, and immune balance rather than assuming fleas are still the problem.

The flea may not be the entire problem.

Sometimes the flea simply exposes an underlying imbalance that was already there.

The Yard Matters More Than Most People Realize

Many people focus entirely on the dog.

The yard is often the real problem.

If you keep putting a clean dog back into a flea-filled yard, congratulations, you have created a flea subscription service.

Cancel it.

Beneficial Nematodes

Beneficial nematodes are microscopic organisms that help reduce flea populations naturally.

I love them because they work with nature rather than against it.

They are especially useful in shaded, moist areas where fleas like to develop.

Diatomaceous Earth

Food-grade diatomaceous earth can be useful in certain dry areas.

The key word is dry.

Once wet, effectiveness drops dramatically.

Avoid creating dust clouds around pets or people. You do not want anyone breathing that in.

Wondercide and Cedarcide

Wondercide and Cedarcide are popular options for yards, patios, and outdoor living areas.

Many pet parents have success incorporating them into a broader flea and tick plan.

Keep the grass trimmed. Reduce debris. Pay attention to shady resting areas. Treat the places your dog actually spends time.

If you’re in a condo or apartment the yard can be a problem — so finding a good solution for your dog is important.

The Long-Term Prevention Strategy Nobody Wants To Talk About

My goal is not just flea prevention.

My goal is building a dog that is less attractive to fleas, less reactive to flea bites, and more resilient when exposed to the inevitable bugs, pollen, mold, heat, humidity, and environmental stressors of summer.

This is one of the reasons I spend so much time talking about fresh food, gut health, detoxification, immune balance, and overall wellness.

People often ask why I am talking about nutrition when they asked about fleas.

Because everything is connected.

The dog eating fresh food, receiving quality nutrition, maintaining a healthy microbiome, supporting detoxification pathways, and avoiding unnecessary inflammation often responds very differently than the dog living on ultra-processed food with chronic skin issues and underlying immune dysfunction.

That is why we talk about fresh food.

That is why we talk about fresh garlic.

That is why we talk about low-tox living.

That is why we talk about seasonal support.

That is why we talk about the terrain of the dog, not just the bug on the dog. Healthy bodies make terrible hosts! And your dog’s scent (or oils we use) can make your dog less attractive.

There is no magic spray, collar, pill, essential oil, supplement, or herb that replaces building a healthier dog from the inside out.

If you have spent any time on my website, you have probably noticed that nearly every road eventually leads back to the same foundations:

Fresh food

Gut health

Reduced inflammation

Detoxification support

Immune balance

Low-tox living

That is not an accident.

Those foundations affect allergies, skin health, digestion, behavior, longevity, and yes, even how your dog responds to fleas and ticks.

So if you are new here and wondering why I keep talking about nutrition in a flea article...

Go read the website.

No, seriously.

Go read.

I have written about this over and over because it matters.

Then come back and join the discussion.

Use the Community chat here in substack.

Ask questions. I absolutely will talk with you about it.

Share what is working.

Tell us what is not.

Learn from other pet parents.

Because chances are, if you are wondering about something, someone else is too.

My Summer Flea And Tick Strategy

If I were starting from scratch, my approach would look something like this:

Feed fresh, species-appropriate food.

Support gut health and immune function.

Use fresh garlic appropriately.

Add Vitamin B support when appropriate.

Use essential oil deterrents.

Use Kin + Kind, 4-Legger, or another quality natural product when needed.

Consider ultrasonic tags only as an optional extra layer.

Check for ticks daily.

Flea comb regularly during high-risk seasons.

Wash bedding often.

Vacuum frequently if fleas are suspected.

Treat the yard with beneficial nematodes.

Use Wondercide or Cedarcide in outdoor areas.

Keep grass trimmed.

Address fleas immediately instead of waiting for an infestation.

Most importantly, stop letting social media convince you there are only two choices:

Chemical everything.

Or do nothing.

There is a large middle ground where many pet parents successfully reduce exposure, support their dog’s health, and manage fleas and ticks naturally.

But you do have to actually do the things.

Reading the article does not repel fleas.

Saving the post does not treat the yard.

Thinking about ordering a spray does not soothe the dog.

Take action before you are in a pickle.

Your dog will thank you.

Your ankles will thank you.

Your vacuum cleaner may still be annoyed, but we cannot please everyone.

Need More Help?

If you are dealing with fleas, ticks, Lyme concerns, heartworm prevention questions, or you are trying to figure out the safest approach for a puppy, senior dog, seizure dog, allergy dog, or cancer dog, you will find additional articles, guides, and discussions throughout the website and Substack community.

Visit: https://welloiledk9.com

Schedule a consultation: https://danabrigman.as.me

Products I recommend are on my affiliate page: https://welloiledk9.com/affiliate-links

Use the Community chat for questions, discussion, and shared learning.

This is exactly what the community is for.

Statements in this article have not been evaluated by the FDA. She feels everything. She can go from calm to completely over the top in seconds.

And when you leave? It falls apart.

Most people label this as separation anxiety or a training issue. And yes, behavior matters. But a lot of the time, that’s not the root of what you’re seeing.

Many of these dogs are what we would call Fire dogs in TCVM.

They’re the emotional ones. The connected ones. The dogs that don’t just love you… they need you.

And if you don’t understand that piece, you’ll keep trying to fix something that isn’t actually broken.

What I see all the time

Dog moms doing everything they’ve been told to do. More exercise, more training, more stimulation. And the dog gets worse.

More anxious. More reactive. More attached.

Because this type of dog doesn’t need more intensity. They need balance.

Is this your dog?

Fire dogs tend to be easy to spot once you know what you’re looking for.

They’re friendly, social, and crave connection. They’re highly aware of your emotions and often mirror them. They tend to run hot, both physically and emotionally.

You might notice panting, red skin or ears, restlessness, or a dog that struggles to fully relax. Many of them sleep sprawled out or belly up, trying to release heat.

You might even see red-hot attitudes and skin conditions.

They’re the dogs that want to be with you all the time… and don’t handle distance very well.

What “Fire” Actually Means

In TCVM, Fire is connected to the heart, circulation, and the Shen. That’s your dog’s emotional state, nervous system, and overall sense of calm.

When Fire is balanced, you get a joyful, connected, expressive dog.

When it’s not, everything gets louder.

Signs Your Dog’s Fire Is Out of Balance

Coffee on the porch. Sunset walks. Salty air. Sandy paws. Patio lunches with your dog curled under the table while strangers tell you how cute they are.

And honestly?

Some days really are that good. My dog loves the beach.

But after years of working with dogs in coastal areas, I can tell you there is another side to beach life that people rarely talk about until something scary happens.

The coast changes things.

The environment changes. The allergens change. The heat changes. The bugs change. The water changes. Even your dog’s nervous system and hydration needs can change.

And if you are moving to the beach with dogs — or even vacationing with them — there are a few things I really want you to understand before your first “perfect beach day.”

Salt Water Toxicity Is Real

This is probably one of the most common beach-related issues I see people underestimate.

Dogs do not usually walk up to the ocean and calmly sip a little salt water like a civilized beachgoer.

Nope.

They:

bite waves

retrieve balls

gulp water while swimming

dig in wet sand

play until they are overstimulated and overheated

And before you realize it, they have swallowed way too much ocean water.

That can lead to:

vomiting

diarrhea

dehydration

neurologic symptoms

tremors

seizures

And honestly, some dogs are more vulnerable than others:

seniors

seizure dogs

kidney dogs

bulldogs

puppies

dogs already stressed physically

Don’t let them drink ocean water! Even drinking fresh water after they ingest ocean water won’t offset the intake.

But, please do bring more fresh water than you think you need.

Offer it often.

Do not wait until your dog is desperately thirsty.

Read More: https://welloiledk9.com/health/salt-water-ingestion-water-toxicity

The Beach Can Overheat Dogs Fast

The coastal breeze tricks people.

You feel comfortable… meanwhile your dog is standing on reflective sand, breathing humid air, running hard, overstimulated, and struggling to cool themselves effectively.

I see this constantly with:

senior dogs

dark-coated dogs

flat-faced breeds

overweight dogs

dogs with chronic illness

high-drive dogs who do not know when to stop

And the scary part?

Heat exhaustion does not always look dramatic at first.

Sometimes it starts as:

slowing down

glassy eyes

heavy panting

acting “weird”

seeking shade suddenly

refusing activity

drooling excessively

That is already your warning sign.

In most cases there are rules for hours in which the dog can be on the beach. While we can safely say they don’t need to be on the beach during the heat of the day — even after 5pm it’s still hot out there.

If you’re brining a service dog to the beach — consider that decision carefully. It’s a risk to your dog. Have shaded areas for them and lots of fresh water.

Read More: https://welloiledk9.com/health/heat-stroke-in-dogs

Hot Sand Is Brutal on Paw Pads

If you cannot comfortably walk barefoot on the sand, parking lot, sidewalk, or boardwalk…

…it is too hot for paws.

Summer beach pavement temperatures get dangerous quickly.

And burned paw pads are miserable to heal.

Early morning and evening beach walks are usually much safer and honestly more enjoyable anyway.

Sago Palms Are Everywhere at the Beach

This one deserves a giant warning label.

Sago palms are extremely toxic to dogs, and coastal communities LOVE using them in landscaping.

You will see them around:

condos

pools

restaurants

hotels

beach rentals

neighborhoods

The seeds are especially dangerous.

And unfortunately many people moving to the coast have no idea these plants are toxic until their dog eats one.

This is not a mild tummy ache situation.

Sago palm exposure can cause severe liver damage and can absolutely become life-threatening.

The Fresh Water Is Sometimes More Dangerous Than the Ocean

Most people worry about sharks.

Meanwhile I’m over here worried about retention ponds.

Especially in the Carolinas and coastal southern areas, freshwater ponds may contain:

alligators

blue-green algae

bacteria

parasites

Please do not assume neighborhood ponds are safe because people walk around them.

Alligators absolutely use retention ponds, canals, golf course water, and neighborhood freshwater areas.

And blue-green algae can become deadly very quickly.

If water looks:

bright green

soupy

scummy

stagnant

foul-smelling

…skip it entirely.

Read More: https://welloiledk9.com/health/blue-green-algae

Jellyfish, Fish Hooks & Dead Things

Dogs investigate life with their sniffers and mouths.

Unfortunately, the beach is full of terrible decisions waiting to happen.

Even dead jellyfish can sting.

Dogs also find:

fish hooks

fishing line

crab remains

dead fish

bait

spoiled food

before humans do.

Beach dogs require supervision the entire time. Not just because they might run off… but because they are basically tiny furry toddlers with no self-preservation skills.

The Beach Is Emotionally Overwhelming for Some Dogs

This is the piece people miss most.

Not every dog enjoys the beach.

Some dogs become emotionally overloaded by:

crowds

noise

fireworks

children

unfamiliar dogs

travel stress

overstimulation

constant activity

And this matters more than people realize.

Sometimes the dog who seems “wild,” “hyper,” “clingy,” “reactive,” or “unable to settle” is actually struggling physically and emotionally.

This is one reason I approach behavior differently than many trainers.

I care about:

nervous system health

inflammation

stress load

nutrition

hydration

sleep quality

environmental exposure

emotional regulation

Because behavior does not happen in a vacuum.

Beach Life With Dogs Can Still Be Amazing

I know this probably sounds like I am anti-beach.

I promise I’m not.

I love coastal living with dogs. And we’re out there often!

But I also believe prepared pet parents make safer decisions.

A little awareness goes a long way toward avoiding:

emergency vet visits

heat injuries

toxin exposure

GI issues

preventable stress

scary situations

Beach life should feel relaxing.

Not chaotic.

Not dangerous.

Not like you are one melted tennis ball and one swallowed jellyfish away from a $2,000 emergency bill.

If you are moving to the coast, vacationing with dogs, or trying to build a healthier low-tox lifestyle for your dog, these are exactly the kinds of things I help pet parents navigate through wellness coaching, nutrition support, behavior support, and practical real-world guidance.

Visit:

https://welloiledk9.com
Schedule a consultation: https://danabrigman.as.me

Dana Brigman | WelloiledK9 is a reader-supported publication. The short version is that it uses gentle electromagnetic frequencies to support the body’s natural communication systems. The body is electrical. The nervous system is electrical. Cells communicate through electrical and chemical signals. So when we support that terrain, we are working with the body in a way that makes sense to me.

And you know me… if something supports the body without bulldozing it, I’m going to pay attention.

I Still Like PetsPEMF / OmniPemF

I want to be very clear about this because people love to turn everything into a this-versus-that situation.

I’ve recommended PetsPEMF. I still think they have good products. I’m not tossing them out the window like yesterday’s kibble.

But over time, I’ve had several clients express frustration with the ordering process, delivery timing, and support experience connected to the European brand OmniPEMF.

That does not mean the product is bad. I think it’s great -- I have 3 of their devices for myself and the dogs!

It means the experience has not always felt easy or smooth for pet parents who are already trying to make good decisions for their dogs. Though I have never had an issue with my own devices or the process or ordering.

When someone is buying a wellness device for their senior dog, their painful dog, their anxious dog, their working dog, or their dog who needs extra support, they do not need more friction. They need clarity, communication, and confidence.

Why Resona Health Caught My Attention

I’ve been looking for a U.S.-based PEMF option that may be a better fit for some of my clients and for my brand overall.

That’s where Resona Health comes in.

What I like about having a U.S.-based option is not just the product itself. It’s the practicality around it.

For many pet parents, U.S.-based support may mean easier communication, smoother shipping, less confusion, and a better overall customer experience.

I don’t just recommend things because they sound fancy. I want products and tools that real people can actually use, understand, access, and feel supported with.

If the purchase process is a headache, the instructions are confusing, or support feels far away, most pet parents are going to get overwhelmed and shove the thing in a closet and be frustrated with me for the recommendation.

Adding Resona Health does not mean I am abandoning other PEMF options. It means I am expanding the conversation and giving you new options.

Some pet parents may still prefer PetsPEMF. Some may prefer a U.S.-based company. Some may need help comparing options before investing.

That includes quality, accessibility, support, education, and whether the product fits into real life.

PEMF is one of those wellness tools I wish more pet parents understood earlier, especially for senior dogs and dogs with chronic patterns. Not because it is magic, but because supporting the body’s natural communication and recovery systems is smart.

I’ll be sharing more as I continue looking into Resona Health and how it may fit into canine wellness plans. I’ll let you know when mine arrives and how it compares in my opinion.

It Happened Again Today

It happened again today. Someone I know personally headed off to the vet for something that, in my opinion, could have had support started at home right away if they had a good natural first aid collection and access to the kind of education I share inside my Substack membership — instead of waiting to get to the vet over a holiday weekend.

Instead, it became the typical route: a vet visit, a hefty bill that could easily land around several hundred dollars, and likely the common recommendations of antibiotics and NSAIDs. And before anyone takes that the wrong way, yes, veterinary care matters. There is a time for diagnostics, prescriptions, emergency care, and a professional exam. I am not telling people to avoid the vet.

Dana Brigman | WelloiledK9 is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

But there is a huge difference between knowing when you truly need the vet and having absolutely no idea what else exists. And also getting started on support while you wait for an appointment or en route to get there in emergencies.

What bothers me most — people don’t know I (an others like me) exist or what we do.

A lot of pet parents do not have a first aid kit ready. They do not know what oils, homeopathics, herbs, supplements, or basic supplies might be helpful to keep on hand. They do not know what can be supported at home, what needs a same-day appointment, and what is a true emergency. So when something happens, they do the only thing they know to do. Well two.

They go to FB neighborhood groups.

They call the vet.

Again, sometimes the vet is exactly the right choice. But sometimes there are supportive steps that could have started immediately, while they waited for guidance, monitored the situation, or decided whether a vet visit was truly necessary.

Sometimes those medications are needed. Sometimes they are appropriate. But they should not be the only tools pet parents know exist.

And that brings me to something I hear all the time:

“I wish I had found you sooner.”

Every time I hear it, I’m sad. Not because I think I have all the answers, and not because I believe every dog needs my help. It bothers me because I know how much frustration, stress, expense, and worry many families go through before they realize there are other resources available.

Recently, I was doing some research on how pet parents search for help online, and what I discovered was eye-opening. Most people are not searching for canine nutritionists, holistic pet health coaches, pet herbalists, animal wellness educators, or behavior consultants. They are searching for veterinarians, pet stores, dog food, groomers, and trainers.

And honestly, that makes sense.

You cannot search for something you do not know exists. Google is ridiculously specific sometimes on what you search for vs what they show.

If you have never heard of a canine nutritionist, why would you think to look for one? If you have never heard of a holistic pet health coach, why would you know to search for one? If nobody has ever explained that there are professionals who help pet parents understand nutrition, gut health, behavior, essential oils, herbs, homeopathy, lifestyle, stress, and proactive wellness, how would you even know that kind of support is available?

Most pet parents know about vets, groomers, trainers, pet sitters, and retail stores. Those are the obvious categories. But there is an entire area of pet care that many people do not discover until they are already overwhelmed.

They find it after years of allergies. After digestive issues. After repeated antibiotics. After anxiety has become unmanageable. After mobility problems have progressed. After the cancer diagnosis. After they have already spent thousands of dollars trying to figure out what is going on. That’s assuming they keep looking for answers or someone makes a referral.

That is when I hear it.

“I wish I had known this years ago.”

“I had no idea nutrition mattered this much.”

“I did not know there were other options.”

“I did not know people like you existed.”

Being too late upsets me. The dogs whose families find me after years of chronic symptoms stay with me. The senior dogs whose families did not know they could have been supporting mobility, cognition, liver health, kidney health, inflammation, and gut health years earlier stay with me. The anxious dogs whose behavior was treated like disobedience when their nervous system, pain level, diet, gut health, and environment all needed to be considered stay with me. Those who ran out of time.

Not because I think I could have fixed everything. Nobody can promise that. But I would have loved the opportunity to help those families understand their options sooner.

That is why I keep teaching. That is why I write the posts, create the guides, offer consultations, and share information that may seem out there until suddenly it is not out there at all.

Because when your dog is uncomfortable, limping, itching, anxious, having digestive issues, doing the pee-pee squat, scratching their ears again, recovering from something, or suddenly acting off, that is not the moment you want to start from scratch. That is not when you want to be panic-Googling at midnight. That is not when you want to realize you do not have anything useful in the house.

A good first aid kit does not mean you never go to the vet. A membership does not mean you never need professional care. But education gives you a better starting point. It helps you ask better questions, recognize patterns sooner, and understand what your dog’s body may be trying to tell you.

Veterinary care is important. Heck, I saw two last week! One for chiropractic and acupuncture, and one for blood work. It is just not the whole picture.

Just like in human health, there is value in having a team. You may have a doctor, but you may also work with a nutritionist, physical therapist, massage therapist, counselor, trainer, or other specialist. Dogs deserve that same bigger-picture thinking.

They deserve more than symptom suppression. They deserve support for the terrain of the body. They deserve food that supports them, a calmer nervous system, less toxic burden, gut support after medications, thoughtful recovery support, and proactive wellness before something breaks.

And pet parents deserve to know these resources exist.

The biggest obstacle is not always finding help. Sometimes the biggest obstacle is knowing what to search for in the first place.

So I have a favor to ask.

If you have learned something from my posts, articles, consultations, classes, guides, or membership, will you tell someone about me? More importantly, will you tell someone about this area of the pet service industry? A google review would be awesome.

Tell them canine nutritionists exist. Tell them holistic pet health coaches exist. Tell them natural first aid education exists. Tell them behavior support can go deeper than obedience. Tell them there are professionals who help pet parents understand food, natural wellness, lifestyle, stress, supplements, herbs, essential oils, homeopathy, and the bigger picture of their dog’s health - with alternative options for antibiotics and NSaids.

You never know who is struggling right now. You never know who is about to spend hundreds of dollars because they did not know there were supportive steps they could have learned sooner. You never know whose dog may benefit from a pet parent discovering these options before they are desperate.

Because the phrase I hear most often is not just, “Thank you.”

It is:

“I wish I had found you sooner.”

And honestly, I wish more people did too.

<a class="image-link image2 But as part of a fresh-food-focused, low-tox lifestyle, they can be a simple way to add concentrated green nutrition to your dog’s routine.

<picture></picture>

What Are EnergyBits?

EnergyBits makes algae tablets using spirulina, chlorella, or a blend of both. Their product line includes:

ENERGYbits — spirulina

RECOVERYbits — chlorella

VITALITYbits — 50% spirulina and 50% chlorella

EnergyBits describes their tablets as single-ingredient algae tablets with no fillers, sugar, or additives. Their spirulina and chlorella products are marketed as plant-based sources of protein, chlorophyll, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids.

For dogs, I generally look at them as food-based support, not a drug, not a replacement for a balanced diet, and not a cure for anything. Just real, concentrated nutrition the body can actually use.

Why Spirulina for Dogs?

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is best known for its dense nutritional profile. EnergyBits describes spirulina as rich in plant-based protein, antioxidants, omega-3s, B vitamins, and other nutrients.

For dogs, spirulina may be useful when you want to support:

Daily nutrient intake

Healthy energy levels

Muscle maintenance

Senior dog vitality

Recovery after stress, travel, exercise, or illness

Dogs eating processed diets that need more whole-food nutrition

Dogs who need a small but mighty food topper

Spirulina is one of those foods that can quietly do a lot in the background. It is not flashy. It is not trendy in the “everyone panic-buy this” kind of way. It is just a dense green food that brings protein, pigments, antioxidants, and micronutrients to the bowl.

And frankly, many dogs need more of that.

Why Chlorella for Dogs?

Chlorella is another type of algae, but it has a slightly different personality than spirulina.

Where spirulina is often thought of as more nourishing and energizing, chlorella is often used when the goal is gentle detox support. EnergyBits describes chlorella as rich in chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and markets it for detoxification, digestion, immune support, and cellular renewal.

For dogs, chlorella may be useful when you want to support:

Gentle daily detox pathways

Exposure to environmental toxins

Dogs on flea, tick, or heartworm medications

Dogs eating processed food

Senior dogs with a higher toxic burden

Post-antibiotic or post-medication recovery support

Seasonal detox protocols

Dogs needing more green food in the diet

This does not mean chlorella “detoxes everything” or that more is better. That is where people get themselves into trouble. Detox should be steady, thoughtful, and supported — not aggressive.

Chlorella can be a helpful part of that plan because it brings chlorophyll, nutrients, and binding-type support in a whole-food form.

Spirulina vs. Chlorella: Which One Should You Use?

Both spirulina and chlorella can be helpful, but they are not exactly the same.

Spirulina is usually my pick when the goal is:

More daily nutrition

Protein support

Healthy energy

Senior vitality

Antioxidant support

Dogs who need a nutritional boost

Dogs recovering from stress or poor diet history

Chlorella is usually my pick when the goal is:

Gentle detox support

Environmental toxin exposure

Heavy metal support

Post-medication support

Seasonal detox protocols

Liver, gut, and elimination support as part of a bigger plan

The spirulina/chlorella combo may be useful when:

You want both nourishment and detox support

You are using it as a daily wellness food

You have a senior dog who needs broad support

You are not targeting one specific goal

You want one simple product instead of choosing between the two

EnergyBits’ VITALITYbits are a 50/50 blend of spirulina and chlorella, which can be helpful for pet parents who want a balanced option.

Why I Like These for Senior Dogs

Senior dogs need more support, not less.

As dogs age, they often need extra help with:

Cellular health

Muscle maintenance

Detoxification

Healthy inflammatory balance

Cognitive support

Gut health

Immune system resilience

Recovery from stress

Nutrient absorption

This is where green superfoods can be useful.

Spirulina brings concentrated nutrition, plant-based protein, antioxidants, and fatty acids. Chlorella brings chlorophyll-rich detox and cellular support. Together, they can be a simple addition to a senior dog wellness plan.

For senior dogs, I am usually thinking about the long game. We are not just trying to “fix” one symptom. We are trying to keep the body supported so the dog can stay mobile, comfortable, clear-headed, and resilient for as long as possible.

That is the whole point.

Using EnergyBits in a Detox Protocol

I like to think of detox support in layers.

You do not just throw a binder at a dog and call it a detox. The body needs to be able to move waste out through the liver, kidneys, lymph, gut, skin, and bile. If those pathways are sluggish, aggressive detox can make a dog feel worse.

EnergyBits chlorella may be useful as part of a gentle detox plan because chlorella is commonly used for toxin-binding and chlorophyll support. Spirulina may be useful alongside it because it helps nourish the body while detox pathways are doing extra work.

This can be especially helpful for dogs who have had:

Long-term processed food exposure

Repeated medications

Flea, tick, and heartworm products

Environmental toxin exposure

Mold exposure

Heavy metal concerns

Poor gut health

Senior-dog slowdown

Recovery after illness or stress

Again, the goal is not to “force detox.” The goal is to support the body so it can do what it was designed to do.

Gentle beats dramatic. Every time.

Recovery Support

Recovery is not just about rest. The body needs raw materials.

After stress, illness, intense activity, surgery, medication, antibiotics, digestive upset, or a flare-up, dogs need nutrient support. Spirulina and chlorella may help provide concentrated nutrients in a very small amount of food.

This can be helpful for dogs who:

Have reduced appetite

Need extra nutrient density

Are rebuilding after gut issues

Are recovering from stress or travel

Need extra antioxidant support

Are seniors who do not bounce back as quickly

This is not a replacement for a complete recovery plan, but it can be a useful add-on.

How I Use This Type of Product

For most dogs, I look at spirulina and chlorella as a small daily topper or rotational support, depending on the dog’s needs.

Ways I may consider using it:

As a daily green food addition

Green based protein support

As part of a senior dog wellness plan

During seasonal detox support

Support Option during Mold Recovery

After medication exposure

During gentle heavy metal support plans

For dogs who need more nutrient density

During recovery periods

Alongside fresh food, probiotics, minerals, and organ support

I would not use this as a stand-alone solution for a dog with serious illness, liver disease, kidney disease, seizures, cancer, or complex chronic symptoms without looking at the full picture.

That does not mean it cannot be supportive. It means we need to be smart.

A Note for Dogs with Sensitive Systems

Even whole-food products can be too much too fast for some dogs.

Dogs with sensitive digestion, chronic disease, kidney disease, liver stress, seizures, histamine issues, autoimmune conditions, or significant toxin burden may need a slower introduction.

Start low. Watch the dog. Adjust your ramp-up based on response.

Where Spirulina and Chlorella Fit in a Real Food Bowl

EnergyBits should not be used as a replacement for a balanced diet.

They can be used to enhance a bowl that already includes species-appropriate food, moisture, quality protein, healthy fats, minerals, and variety.

They may pair well with:

Fresh food meals

Raw or gently cooked diets

Kibble transition plans

Senior dog bowls

Detox-support meals

Recovery meals

Green food rotation

Functional mushrooms

Fulvic and humic minerals

Liver and kidney support protocols

Gut repair plans

Think of spirulina and chlorella as small but concentrated helpers.

Not the whole toolbox. Just a really useful tool.

My Practical Take

I like EnergyBits because they are simple.

No long ingredient panel.
No weird flavor system.
No trendy nonsense.
No “let’s add 47 things and hope one of them works” formula.

Just algae-based nutrition in a tablet form.

For dogs, I especially like the idea of spirulina and chlorella for:

Senior wellness

Daily nutrient support

Gentle detox support

Recovery

Dogs transitioning away from highly processed food

Dogs needing more green nutrition

Seasonal detox protocols

Pet parents who want something easy and realistic

Because let’s be honest — if it is too complicated, most people will not do it consistently. And consistency matters.

My dogs think they are getting a treat! But it would make an easy add-on to food, broth, etc.

<p class="button-wrapper" fully)

At the top of the pet-friendly menu section was a liability notice:

“Dog items are made with real food.”

I sat there for a second because… wow. That one little sentence said a whole lot about where we still are with dogs, food, and fear.

Not artificial preservatives. Not ultra-processed ingredients. Not synthetic flavor enhancers. Not rendered meals, rancid fats, chemical additives, or “natural flavor” mystery dust.

Real food.

I understand listing ingredients. I understand saying “contains dairy” or “gluten-free” or “ask about allergens.”

But a liability notice because the dog treats are made with real food? Aka People food as many like to call it.

So I snapped a photo and shared it because I thought the point was obvious. I assumed people would see the same irony I saw.

Boy was I wrong.

The comments immediately turned into:

“That causes pancreatitis.”

“Dogs shouldn’t eat people food.”

“Tomatoes are toxic.” (they are safe is small amounts — aka the snack burger)

“American cheese is horrible.”

“This is why dogs get sick.”

And I just sat there thinking…

Did everyone miss the point, or are we really this far off track?

Because the entire reason I shared the local photo was the absurdity that a business now feels the need to legally protect itself for serving real food to dogs.

My point was about the fear of people food and the fact that so many dogs cannot actually eat a treat like this.

I wasn’t even thinking about the menu item itself — a snack burger with lettuce, tomato and cheese.

And yes, before someone gasps into their kibble scoop, nobody is claiming this treat is a balanced meal or superfood.

But a tiny bite of American cheese on an occasional snack burger is not the hill canine nutrition needs to die on.

The burger itself was unseasoned. No onions. No greasy fast-food mystery meat situation. I’ve had preferred it to be raw and no bun — but that would be a whole new liability on handling raw meat at a restaurant.

It was an unseasoned burger offered on a pet-friendly menu.

And somehow, in people’s minds, real food became the danger.

That reaction told me more about modern pet nutrition culture than the menu ever did.

We’ve Been Conditioned to Fear Real Food

Somewhere along the way, we lost the plot.

Dogs evolved alongside humans eating real food: meat, organs, scraps, fish, eggs, connective tissue, seasonal foods, and leftovers.

Long before kibble existed.

And yet now many pet parents have been so conditioned by modern pet food marketing that fresh food itself creates panic.

A fresh burger patty? Dangerous.

But heavily processed pellets that can sit on a shelf for months or years somehow feel “safe” because they came from a bag with scientific wording and a veterinary recommendation attached to it.

That disconnect is fascinating. And honestly, it’s a little terrifying.

We are now so disconnected from actual nutrition that a restaurant feels compelled to issue a liability warning because dog treats are “made with real food.”

Read that again.

Made with real food.

As though real food alone should concern us.

“But Pancreatitis!”

This came up over and over in the comments.

And let me be very clear: pancreatitis is serious. I’m not minimizing that for one second. It can be painful, dangerous, expensive, and in some cases life-threatening.

But “people food” as a whole is not the real issue.

Real food is not automatically the problem.

The bigger issue is that many dogs now have fragile digestive systems from years of ultra-processed food, diets void of natural enzymes, inflammatory ingredients, poor gut diversity, unstable microbiomes, chronic stress, medications, obesity, repeated chemical exposure, and metabolic dysfunction. And people are scared of real food.

And yes, we also need to talk about the role of rendered or rancid fats, poor-quality non-animal fats, high-carbohydrate diets, and aging digestive systems that may not be producing enough enzymes to handle food well anymore.

That is very different from saying, “real food, causes pancreatitis.” — especially fresh, raw or gently cooked food.

Sometimes one small bite of unfamiliar food becomes the thing that exposes the imbalance, and suddenly the hamburger gets blamed for the whole collapse.

That does not mean every dog should eat rich foods freely. Some dogs need lower-fat meals. Some dogs need slower transitions. Some dogs with a history of pancreatitis need much tighter management. Some dogs need digestive enzymes, gut repair, and microbiome support before they can handle variety well.

That is individualized nutrition.

But we need to stop pretending fresh food itself is the villain.

The bigger question is this: why are so many dogs’ digestive systems so unstable that a small amount of real food can tip them over?

Subscribe now

The Part That Honestly Surprised Me

What surprised me most wasn’t disagreement.

At this point, disagreement is expected. I work in holistic pet health. I promote fresh food. I push back on outdated nutrition ideas. I question the “just feed the bag forever” approach all the time.

So no, I am not shocked when people disagree.

What surprised me was how quickly people interpreted “real food” as the problem.

Not kibble.

Not ultra-processing.

Not the fact that so many dogs have digestive systems so unstable that one bite of actual food can cause chaos.

Real food.

That matters.

Because if the majority of pet parents still resist someone like me promoting real food, and if they push back even on real food as an occasional snack for kibble-fed dogs, then we have more work to do.

If people panic over a tiny bite of tomato…

If a little piece of American cheese on an occasional snack burger causes outrage…

If people genuinely believe fresh meat is more dangerous than years of ultra-processed feeding…

Then we have a serious education gap.

Not because people are stupid.

Because the conditioning runs deep.

Most pet parents truly believe they are protecting their dogs by avoiding “people food.” They’ve been taught that real food is risky while processed food is normal.

That belief system did not appear overnight.

It was built over decades.

And moments like this remind me exactly why education matters.

Dogs Are Still Biological Animals

Dogs are not fragile little processed-food machines.

They are biological animals.

Their bodies recognize moisture. Their bodies recognize protein. Their bodies recognize fresh nutrients. Their digestive systems benefit from variety, quality, and less processing when introduced appropriately.

And ironically, many pet parents who start adding fresh foods the right way notice real improvements:

better stools

healthier weight

improved energy

better muscle tone

healthier skin

fewer digestive issues

more excitement around meals

improved mobility

Not because fresh food is magic.

Because real food is biologically normal.

Now, does that mean every dog should be handed a greasy restaurant meal every weekend? No. Don’t be ridiculous.

But a healthy dog having an occasional unseasoned real-food snack at a pet-friendly restaurant is not the downfall of canine health.

The bigger issue is that so many people no longer recognize real food as normal.

The Real Liability

The more I thought about that menu, the more I realized the liability notice accidentally exposed something much bigger.

The real liability is not the unseasoned burger.

The real liability is that we’ve become so disconnected from food that “made with real food” now sounds dangerous.

The real liability is that pet parents are being taught to fear fresh food while trusting ultra-processed diets without question.

The real liability is that dogs’ guts are often so unstable from years of poor-quality food and chronic stress that a small bite of real food can become a serious problem.

The real liability is longevity.

And instead of asking why the gut is so fragile, people blame the cheese.

This is why I keep talking about fresh food, gut health, enzymes, microbiome support, low-tox living, and individualized nutrition.

Because if a dog’s body cannot tolerate a small amount of real food, that is not proof real food is bad.

That is a sign we need to ask better questions.

And yes, we clearly still have a lot of work to do.

If you have a dog you’re afraid to give “real food” to — we should talk and work on their gut.

Want more discussions on fresh feeding, natural wellness, behavior, longevity, low-tox living, and helping dogs thrive naturally?

Visit:
The Well Oiled K9

Join the community and member discussions:
WelloiledK9 Substack

Schedule a consultation:
Dana Brigman Consultations

Statements in this blog have not been evaluated by the FDA.
